The University of Cambridge Lieder Schemeis an advanced coaching scheme supporting the most promising singers and accompanists in the University. Tuition in all aspects of Lieder and song performance is given by award-winning pianist Joseph Middleton, recently described by The Times as ‘the cream of the new generation’ of British accompanists, along with visiting coaches. In recent seasons, artists who have coached duos on the scheme include John Mark Ainsley, Joan Rodgers, Amanda Roocroft, Roderick Williams, Sir Thomas Allen and Dame Sarah Connolly.
Alumni of the scheme have made successful careers in music performance. Recent alumni include Hugh Cutting (winner of the 2021 Kathleen Ferrier Award and a current BBC New Generation Artist), Gramophone Award-winning mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, and Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition winner Florian Störtz.
“The University Lieder Scheme was a vital first step down a path of music making that now forms a significant part of my career. In a university full of musical opportunities of all shapes and sizes it managed to provide me with something that was missing: time and space for exploration in the amazing world that is song. Joseph’s guidance and the teaching from visiting performers remains in my mind to this day, as do the partnerships I made with other performers on scheme (just last year I gave concerts with Keval Shah who was my duo partner on the scheme). I knew that song needed to be an inherent part of me as a performer, and I am so grateful that the scheme was there to help me begin to find my way”.

“I discovered the world of song when I started at Cambridge, and by the start of my second year, I was devoting a lot of my time to studying repertoire and getting to know as much as I could about this corner of the musical universe. It was incredible, then, to be able to take part in the University Lieder Scheme at this early stage in my training, and benefit from tuition from such prominent figures in the profession so early on. It offered me so many insights into different ways of listening and thinking about song repertoire, and got me aiming for a really high level from the very beginning. The Lieder Scheme set me up so well for my postgraduate study in London, and I look back on my time on the Scheme as the first crucial step in the path that has led me to where I am today”.
